Course Description

Year 1, also known as First Grade, is a year where foundational academic skills are solidified, providing a strong base for future learning. In this grade, students continue to develop key skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and social studies, while also exploring the world around them through science, art, and physical education. The curriculum is designed to encourage curiosity, foster a love for learning, and help students build confidence in their abilities. Year 1 focuses on interactive and hands-on learning experiences, enabling students to grow academically, socially, and emotionally.

Core Subjects

  1. English Language Arts (Reading & Writing):
In Year 1, students develop foundational literacy skills through phonics, vocabulary building, and reading comprehension. They learn to recognize sight words, decode words using letter sounds, and improve their fluency in reading aloud. Students are introduced to various genres of literature, including stories, poems, and informational texts, and focus on understanding the main idea, characters, and setting. Writing skills are honed through activities like drawing and labeling, sentence formation, and short story writing. Students also learn to express their thoughts clearly, improving their spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

  2. Mathematics:
Year 1 math emphasizes the understanding of basic mathematical concepts such as counting, addition, subtraction, and number recognition. Students work with numbers up to 100 and begin to learn about place value, patterns, and simple word problems. They explore geometry by identifying shapes, understanding symmetry, and recognizing patterns in the world around them. Measurement concepts like length, weight, and time are also introduced. Throughout the year, students develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills through engaging, hands-on activities and interactive lessons.

  3. Science:
In Year 1 science, students are introduced to the natural world through exploration and discovery. Topics may include the seasons, plants and animals, weather patterns, and the basic principles of physical science. Students engage in simple experiments and observe natural phenomena, learning how to make predictions and record observations. The curriculum emphasizes curiosity and exploration, encouraging students to ask questions and seek answers through hands-on activities and guided learning.

  4. Social Studies:
Year 1 social studies focuses on understanding the concept of community, family roles, and basic geography. Students learn about the importance of rules and responsibilities, the diversity of cultures, and the roles of people in society. They are introduced to maps and simple geographic concepts, such as understanding their local community and country. Social studies lessons also include topics on historical figures, holidays, and traditions, allowing students to appreciate cultural diversity and develop a sense of belonging in the world around them.

  5. Art & Creative Expression:
In Year 1, students engage in creative activities that allow them to express themselves through art, music, and movement. Art lessons introduce students to basic concepts like color, texture, and shape, encouraging them to experiment with different materials and techniques. They also explore music through songs, rhythm, and simple instruments, fostering an appreciation for sound and movement. Dance and drama activities encourage students to use their imagination and creativity, enhancing their ability to communicate and express themselves in a fun and engaging way.

  6. Physical Education:
Physical education in Year 1 focuses on developing fine and gross motor skills through physical activities, games, and exercises. Students work on balance, coordination, and movement, and learn about teamwork, cooperation, and sportsmanship. The curriculum also emphasizes the importance of staying active, making healthy choices, and understanding the basic concepts of fitness and wellness.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
