Course Description

Overview:
Year 4 in the USA curriculum is a year of greater independence and academic development. Students continue to refine and strengthen the skills they have built in previous years, with an increased focus on developing deeper knowledge and understanding across all subjects. The curriculum emphasizes literacy, numeracy, critical thinking, and the application of knowledge in real-world contexts. Year 4 students engage in more complex problem-solving, research, and collaboration, while enhancing their ability to communicate effectively through writing, speaking, and presenting. The year also offers greater opportunities for students to explore topics in science, social studies, and the arts, encouraging curiosity and intellectual growth.

Core Subjects

  1. Language Arts:
Year 4 language arts focuses on advancing reading comprehension, writing skills, and grammar. Students read a variety of texts, including fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, with an emphasis on understanding deeper meanings, themes, and text structures. They practice summarizing key ideas, identifying supporting details, and making inferences about what they read. Writing instruction covers various genres, including narrative, persuasive, and informational writing. Students refine their ability to write with clarity, organization, and proper grammar. They also continue to expand their vocabulary and spelling, incorporating new words into their writing and speaking. Oral communication skills are developed through presentations, group discussions, and debates.

  2. Mathematics:
Year 4 mathematics focuses on building a deeper understanding of number operations, fractions, measurement, and data analysis. Students master multi-digit addition and subtraction and work with larger numbers in both operations. They expand their knowledge of multiplication and division, including solving problems with remainders and working with multi-step word problems. Fractions are explored in greater detail, including equivalent fractions, adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators, and comparing fractions. Students learn how to measure length, area, and volume, and apply these skills to solve real-world problems. Geometry topics include identifying and classifying shapes, understanding symmetry, and exploring the properties of angles. Data analysis skills are developed through working with graphs and charts, allowing students to interpret and display data.

  3. Science:
Year 4 science builds on students' understanding of the natural world, with a focus on scientific inquiry and investigation. Topics include ecosystems, energy, matter, and the Earth's systems. Students explore the relationships between living organisms and their environment, learning about habitats, food chains, and ecosystems. They investigate the properties of matter, including states of matter, chemical changes, and the physical properties of substances. Students also explore energy, including light, sound, and electricity, and learn about the Earth's processes such as weather, erosion, and the water cycle. Hands-on experiments and projects help students develop their scientific reasoning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

  4. Social Studies:
Year 4 social studies focuses on geography, history, and the study of cultures and communities. Students learn about geographic features such as continents, oceans, and countries, and explore the concepts of map reading, location, and climate. They study the history and culture of the United States, focusing on important historical events, figures, and periods such as the Native American tribes, European exploration, the colonial period, and the American Revolution. Students also explore the concept of citizenship and the rights and responsibilities of individuals in a democratic society. Emphasis is placed on understanding how historical events shaped the modern world and fostering an appreciation for cultural diversity and global awareness.

  5. The Arts and Creative Expression:
In Year 4, students engage in more advanced artistic and creative activities. In visual arts, students experiment with various media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, and printmaking, to express ideas and emotions. They explore different art movements, artists, and techniques while developing their personal artistic style. Music education focuses on learning about musical notation, rhythm, and melody. Students practice singing, playing instruments, and understanding music theory. Drama and theater activities allow students to engage in role-playing, acting, and scriptwriting, helping them develop confidence in self-expression. Dance education encourages students to explore movement, rhythm, and choreography, fostering creativity and coordination.

  6. Physical Education:
Year 4 physical education continues to emphasize fitness, coordination, and teamwork. Students engage in a variety of physical activities and sports, such as running, basketball, soccer, and gymnastics, to build strength, endurance, and motor skills. They learn the fundamentals of various sports, focusing on teamwork, fair play, and sportsmanship. Physical education also includes lessons on health and wellness, including nutrition, exercise, and the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Students are encouraged to set personal fitness goals and develop habits that will support long-term physical well-being.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
