Course Description

Year 6 Course Description:

In Year 6, students consolidate their knowledge and skills across all academic subjects, preparing for their transition to high school. The curriculum is designed to challenge students with more complex concepts and to foster independence, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. Year 6 students are encouraged to take an active role in their learning, develop leadership skills, and apply their knowledge to real-world situations. The subjects covered include English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), Health and Physical Education (HPE), and The Arts.

Subjects and Syllabus:

  • English: The Year 6 English curriculum enhances students' ability to read, write, and communicate effectively. Students will engage with a wide range of texts, including novels, poetry, informational texts, and multimedia. They will refine their writing skills, focusing on structure, style, and grammar for different text types, including persuasive, narrative, and expository writing. Speaking and listening skills will also be developed through presentations, discussions, and debates. Students will be encouraged to critically analyze texts, identifying themes, viewpoints, and literary devices.

  • Mathematics: Year 6 students will build on their mathematical foundations, developing advanced skills in number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability. They will explore more complex topics, such as percentages, ratios, algebraic expressions, angles, and the properties of shapes. Students will work on applying mathematical concepts to solve real-life problems and engage in activities that promote critical thinking, logical reasoning, and problem-solving skills.

  • Science: The Year 6 Science curriculum covers a variety of scientific fields, including biological sciences, physical sciences, earth and space sciences, and chemical sciences. Students will study topics such as ecosystems, the water cycle, forces and motion, energy, light, and matter. They will conduct experiments and investigations, using scientific methods to make observations, test hypotheses, and analyze results. Emphasis will be placed on developing inquiry skills, problem-solving, and scientific communication.

  • Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS): In Year 6, students explore a more in-depth study of Australian history, geography, civics, and citizenship. Topics may include the exploration of early Australia, the impact of European settlement on Indigenous communities, the growth of the nation, and Australia’s role in the global community. Students will also study environmental challenges, sustainability, and the importance of responsible decision-making in both local and global contexts.

  • Health and Physical Education (HPE): Year 6 HPE focuses on promoting physical fitness, well-being, and personal development. Students will engage in a variety of physical activities, including team sports, individual challenges, and fitness routines. They will learn about nutrition, mental health, and strategies to maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle. In addition, students will be encouraged to set personal goals related to physical activity and health, develop teamwork skills, and understand the importance of positive mental health.

  • The Arts: The Year 6 Arts curriculum allows students to deepen their exploration of visual arts, music, drama, and dance. Students will develop skills in creating, performing, and interpreting works of art, exploring a variety of materials, techniques, and cultural contexts. They will participate in performances, art exhibitions, and collaborative projects that encourage creativity and self-expression. Students will also analyze and reflect on their own and others' work, gaining an understanding of the broader role of the arts in society.

This comprehensive curriculum helps Year 6 students consolidate their learning and prepares them for the challenges of high school by focusing on both academic excellence and personal development.
