NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) is an annual assessment for Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9, evaluating essential skills in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar, and punctuation), and numeracy. It is managed by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) and is aligned with the Australian Curriculum to assess foundational learning skills.
From 2023, NAPLAN is administered in Term 1 (March) to provide earlier access to results. The majority of students now take the test online, allowing for adaptive testing and quicker feedback. NAPLAN is not a pass-or-fail test but a tool to identify student strengths and opportunities for improvement.
All students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 across Australian schools are expected to participate in NAPLAN, regardless of background or school type. The tests are coordinated by ACARA, in collaboration with state and territory education authorities, and administered by schools.
Participation is expected unless students are exempt, withdrawn, or absent. Exemptions apply to those with significant intellectual disabilities or students who have been learning English for less than 12 months. Parents and carers may also withdraw their children for religious or philosophical reasons. Results are reported using proficiency standards introduced in 2023.
Since 2023, NAPLAN results are reported using new proficiency standards across four levels: Exceeding, Strong, Developing, and Needs Additional Support. Below is the breakdown of these levels by year level and subject.
